The student from Hawaii was a visitor from another country/land in 1947.   Hawaii was granted statehood on August 21, 1959

Mr. Ewaliko a person to remember!   His list of LIFE’s accomplishments is something to behold.   I am honored to have been one of his students at Gervais Hi; the building is now an elementary school. 

Sports and Mr. Ewaliko were synonymous from the time he got off the plane and joined Willamette University.   After graduation in 1954, he was offered a job at the Gervais School District; his assignment P.E. teacher and coach.  He also volunteered at McLaren School for Boys.

This mix of contact with students, parents and community motivated Mr. Ewaliko to also serve in the local city council.  Early in his career, he learned how the blend of education, sports, families and city government were inter-related.  He became a strong local figure.  He knew every student in the school, saw the parents/families at and off the field and was always surrounded by students; popular?  More than that! “Teacher and Coach Ewaliko” became well known locally, as well as, at the state level.  It is safe to assert that he was the only Hawaii born teacher.  In fact, Hawaii had not obtained statehood when he got his new teaching job in 1954.

Twenty years separated Mr. Ewaliko and me.  I wanted to be in sports but due to my age (one year beyond the mark) I did not qualify to participate.   My consolation to this dilemma—he told me to get some of the athletes into shape; so, I did my best. 

The Gervais Community and the teaching profession is honored to have had such a “Champion.”  A person for all seasons..and all the sports!  William Ewaliko “Bill!”

I am honored to be part of his path and humbled and honored to be alive to express my gratitude.  I am certain that the Gervais Alumni feel the same—WE ALL THANK YOU!

While Mr. Ewaliko enjoyed a long life, the passing of a LOVED one is always difficult.  My CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY.

Happy Birthday Papá Arturo

Our approach and style in sharing the NEWS!

On this 22nd day of May 2018…Happy Birthday papá Arturo.  Dad arrived at St. Paul, Marion County, USA in 1943.   It was his arrival and the marriage to --mi mama --Maria who inspired us to create our website.  Dad was born in Asherton, Dimmit County, Texas on May 22nd, 1912.

This section of our website includes old news, as well as some contemporary news.  Via my research of National Newspapers, I am hopeful that I can find relevant and related stories that can supplement, confirm, verify many of my own stories.   It is almost like a pen-pal approach.  As you visit this section "NEWS" you will find an opportunity for you to also participate by posting  your comments/opinions or questions.  Due to "Father Time" it is not likely that you will find postings from people who are 70+ years old"  Yours truly keeps active in this endeavor of research and saving our history as remembered by people who use the 1st person singular; which means that a conventional research format or  style will not be used.

TIMELINE FOR NEWS:  All relevant news reports that I can find prior to 1968 will be included; why 1968? well, it is because Lidia my future wife found me working on my car…always under the hood; thank you Lidia!  We both support and work on this project that has turned out to be a lifetime endeavor.  Our house is wall to ceiling … paper work and AV that is dated and important to us.  YES in 1968, we got married!...and I still work on cars; it is my hobby! 

Here is a link or an example of the format that you can expect.  We have placed the ICON and the stories under this heading to give credit to the authors/newspapers; their effort  was dated when it was published.   Our contribution to this effort is to expand on the story, this is also dated.   Keep in mind that we use a little bit of Spanglish-Tex-Mex.  The fact that we have lived in Oregon since 1952, which is about the time that Oregon had a Migrant Population explosion,  gives Lidia and Miguel a VANTAGE POINT.  We regard this to be a blessing and we are honored to share the Newspaper Stories along with how Miguel and Lidia view the subject then and now.  Using our independent oral-history research and the vast  A/V material we have collected, we offer a unique point of view.  We are independent and have no ties to political groups, clubs, agencies or organizations to guide and/or influence our work.  Admittedly, we wish there were more people interested in oral history and/or simply writers of Mexican Roots, who could share their experiences/views and not always rely on the general MEDIA.

Le deseo hoy a papa Arturo "Feliz Día"  Mi papa nació el 22 de Mayo de 1912.  Los datos indican que fue el primer Tejano de llegar al pueblo de St. Paul, Marion County, USA en 1943.  "Your dad and I arrived to St. Paul the same year" recuerda Elaine Smith, quien todavia vive en St. Paul.  Siendo el único Tejano con una personalidad fácil de recordar…gente de 90 años para arriba lo recuerdan.  Gracias Elaine por tus contribuciones!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAPA ARTURO  5.22.2018

My dad spent his last days at our home; the room where he slept is a few feet from my computer…this is a special MOMENT. 

Arturo was my step-father.  I first met my dad at the Hotel Janeiro in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mejico.   He brought me to Oregon in the same year-1952.

"New Migration California's 5th" - 1940

UN MOMENTO!.. Mr. author of this article; the name not noted as it originated from the (UP). I have interviewed many migrants who happen to have Mexican Roots; not a novelty in California which was once part of Mejico. The assumptions made by the press regarding the reasons why Mexicans did not mind a lower standard of living need AN EXPLANATION! I am certain that if given the opportunity to live on both sides of the BELL SHAPE CURVE most Mexicans would have selected the upper R-10%.

The article reads:

New Migration California's Fifth

The influx of middle western migrants to California during recent years represents the fifth great migration in the state's history, according to a report by George Gleason, executive secretary of the Los Angeles county committee for church and community cooperation.

The new migration, however, is the first of the native, white Americans. The previous immigrants were Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and Filipino, respectively.

The Chinese, in large numbers, were brought in following the gold rush of 1849, Gleason said. They built the railroads and provided cheap labor for mines and farm. Their immigration was cut off by law in 1888. 

Filipino Influx in 1920s

Then followed the successive waves of cheap foreign labor. First the Japanese, whose immigration was checked in 1907 and finally stopped in 1924. Japanese were followed by the Mexicans and by 1920 there were 70,000 Japanese and 80,000 foreign-born Mexicans in California. Filipinos to the number of 31,000 were brought in between 1920 and 1929.

"Since 1934, however," Gleason said, "Due to the repatriation of many Mexicans and the cutting off of Filipino immigration, the complexion of the agricultural migrants has literally changed, so that 80 to 90 per cent are now na-...."
